Although the official date of the region’s conception is not known for certain, the origin of this municipality is linked to the arrival of three Azorean sisters, nicknamed the “ilhoas” due to them being from Faial Island. The city is home to beautiful waterfalls, including the Ronca fall, as well as the Furado Lake and the Dois irmãos Peak, ideal for trail walking. A special mention must also be given to the municipality’s traditional festivals; the Festa da Igreja (Festival of Churches) in June, the Festa do agricultor (Farmer’s Festival), and the Agricultural Exhibition.
