A site of Humanity’s Cultural Heritage, a title given to the area by UNESCO in 1985, Congonhas is home to the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Shrine. Its fame is due not only to its religious observance, but also for the splendid works created by Master Antônio Francisco Lisboa, otherwise known as Aleijadinho. These works make the area home to one of the major components of Brazil’s artistic heritage. There are 12 prophets carved from soapstone in the forecourt of the Basilica, and 66 figures made in cedar in Passos da Paixão. The local economy is based the region’s mining activity, thanks to its rich natural deposits of iron ore. The name Congonhas is derived from a plant of the same name; its origins lie in the Tupi Indian word “Kô gôi”, which means “the one who sustains” or “the one who nourishes”. The plant was commonly used to make a tea that, according to locals, is beneficial in treating several types of ailments. Among the natural attractions of the city, the Água Limpa Waterfall has a natural waterslide. In the Horto Florestal, trails lead tourists to the peak of the hill, where a viewpoint has been constructed. The Água Preta Lagoon welcomes tourists with a mesmerising illumination effect created by the city’s lights. Travel Tips: Sculptures created by Aleijadinho can be found in the Bom Jesus de Matosinhos Shrine, the churchyard, and the Passos de Paixão.
