Viçosa’s first name was Santa Rita do Turvo. The nucleus of the municipality emerged in 1800 when the local priest, Francisco José da Silva, received authorisation to construct a chapel dedicated to Santa Rita. The city is particularly proud of its educational heritage. Since the start of the 20th century, Viçosa has been home to a number of traditional schools and today houses one of the main agronomic study centres in Latin America, the Federal de Viçosa University. With a large, young population, the city holds lively parties all week long.
