Before becoming a city in July 1857, Ubá had formed around the chapel erected by Father Manoel de Jesus Maria, which had been built for the purpose of catechising the local Indians. The origin of the city’s current name has two versions. The some historians claim that this was the same name given to an indigenous canoe used by natives, while the second account states that Ubá is a type of fine, rich sugar cane. A city in the Zona da Mata, located in the Mata de Ubá Micro-region, Ubá’s most illustrious son is the composer Ary Barroso, creator of the “Aquarela do Brasil”. Today the municipality’s furniture industry is its main economic contributor.
