Located in the south of Minas, this municipality has a mainly mountainous topography and is known as Terra do Morango (Land of Strawberries). During the 17th and 18th centuries, next to the mouth of a tributary to the Três Irmãos River, Estiva served as a gateway to the São Paulo region. As its surrounding area was covered by swamplands, a 210 metre wooden cylindrical stowage tank was constructed to stop moisture infiltration in the area. Today in this area you will find an obelisk built to commemorate the municipality’s creation. Its name, originally Brejo da Estiva, and later simply Estiva, was initially bestowed on a stretch of nearby road, then to a local stream, and finally to the village that was formed later. Travel Tips: The city celebrates its anniversary in December. It also promotes the traditional festivals of Morango (strawberries) in August, Peão in June, and Santa Padroeira and Nossa Senhora Aparecida in October.
